We always know what’s best for someone else to do with their time, don’t we? By the way, I’d love to hear all your guesses as to what kind of notion Ashley is (no credit if you read it on one of my blogs, somewhere :P).
I reckon she’s an inspiration of some kind. Like, the sudden whim to take up ice dancing without any clear reason why, and no guarantee of the conviction to follow it through.
Is this Ashley, or Mona? Either way, that IS definitely a type of notion, although not either of these two!
Hm, I think she may be…something like envy? She’s doing the whole “oh no don’t try out this new thing, you’re already good enough, you may end up disappointed, I’m just worried about you!” thing, while she probably isn’t so much worried about Mona’s happiness as she is worried that Mona will grow and become “better” than her. Or that Mona won’t /need/ her anymore (or both)? She strikes me as the type of person who only keeps people around who look up to her, tries to…kind of keep them down and under her control, and feels threatened when those people start living their own lives. I feel like I’m making it sound like I think Ashley is a bad person, but that’s not the case! She’s just insecure in a way. I know the feeling, I’m pretty sure I’ve been on both sides.
Not sure if this makes any sense or if I’m just talking out of my ass, haha! It’s fun to speculate. Also, Chowder, I think you’re talking about Mona, not Ashley…?
Wow, were you able to get all this from what I’ve written so far?? I feel like this is too perceptive to be gleaned from me, alone! All VERY VERY on-point, gosh, thank you for this!
Haha, I think it’s partly because I uh. Very much recognize this type of attitude. Probably doesn’t say much good about (past? I hope it’s past!) me, but yeah, very relatable! But it’s also very much because of your writing! I think that these couple of lines, the bolding of certain words, combined with the illustrations (Ashley’s expression in the third panel!) tell us a lot about Ashley’s character. I think it’s amazing that you were able to convey that much information in only two pages!
Hey, everyone has their flaws! The important thing is to keep workin’ at ’em once we can identify them, so you’re way ahead of the curve, there. c: Thank you so much, I’m really pleased that what I’m writing and illustrating seems to come across as intended – well – BETTER than I intended or expected, really!
Like many people it took me a while to figure out that this story had a deeper plot point than just being the average slice of life- and I really love it all the more now that I know (I figured it out quite a ways back but it seemed silly to post way back there). A lot of things draw me to this comic, including your absolutely fantastic character design and the great character development I’ve seen so far. Also, I remember creating muses for myself back in my early days of arting, so this…intrigues me because of that. And lastly because- like many other people I’m sure- I see a lot of my own experiences in Mona. Knowing that you really want to strive to be a part of something bigger and better and more beautiful is easy, but finding out what that means is hard. I really look forward to seeing how this plays out.
Aw, thank you so much! I really did want the comic to gradually show people what was going on, rather than the whole one-two punch, BANG, here’s the hook – ya know what I mean? Hopefully as it keeps unwinding and dropping more information to flesh things out, it only gets more enjoyable for those following along. Your comments are so sweet, I’m glad you like the characters (on the visual AND developmental side, at that) and I’m happy to have you reading!
I’ve just finished reading all the way to this point, and I wanted to say how much I like your comic. I love your art style and I’m really intrigued by the way the story is going so far. Looking forward to the next installment. 🙂
Hey, shucks, thank you on all counts! I’m really glad you’re enjoying it, I hope you’ll stick around, and lemme know how you like further developments, too.
